The province of Ontario recently updated its rules for young and new drivers. The changes, which come into effect September 1, 2019, are designed to give new drivers more experience on the road and reduce the number of accidents involving young drivers.
The changes to the graduated licensing system include an increase in the amount of time new drivers must spend in the learner stage, during which they are only allowed to drive with a fully licensed driver. The changes also include an increase in the number of hours of supervised driving new drivers must complete in the intermediate stage, and a reduction in the number of passengers new drivers can carry in the late-night hours.
While the changes to the graduated licensing system may seem like they are designed to make life more difficult for young drivers, they are actually meant to improve safety on the roads. New drivers who spend more time in the learner stage and have more supervised driving experience are less likely to be involved in accidents.
Reducing the number of passengers new drivers can carry late at night is also a safety measure, as tiredness and alcohol use are both factors in many accidents involving young drivers.
The changes to the graduated licensing system are a step in the right direction when it comes to improve safety on the roads.
